Ring, ring
Why don't you give me a call? It's terrifying.
I called a few companies last Monday, and the first (and only...) one to pick up was Elizabeth, a construction... broker? I think. Anyway, it's been a long time since I've done this and she asked "Wondial? What's that?," to which I went straight in for the pitch. "24/7 phone line... trained on your website..." yada yada. "No, I'm not interested" she reflexively responded. I don't blame her.
Qualify!
What I should have done was ask follow-ups — is it always you that answers the phone? Have you thought about getting someone else to handle your calls?
On Tuesday I called Matt, and he also wondered what on earth Wondial was. Learning from my mistakes I asked a question instead, if he always answered the phone, and.. "what, my cell phone? Yeah, I always answer that myself" like DUH, so I clarified by mentioning his business and he immediately said I had the wrong number, and hung up. Eesh. Progress, I guess?
Eurgh. Launching was exciting, but reality hit me last week: I have a boat to finish! I still want to make this work, and had a revelation: what if... I work smarter? Selling is my weakness, and I have a terrible tendency to do everything myself; "best independent worker" was the certificate I received in class 3 for our group project.
Divide and conquer
Last year I met with a guy, Jonny, via Y Combinator's co-founder matching. We got on well and had a lovely chat, but weren't in places to work on anything together and agreed to stay in touch. So I reached out last week, and today we're catching up.
He has a background in sales, and whether it goes further is beside the point — I will find someone complementary, for whom sales is easy, and we can grow this thing together. Slice of a watermelon vs a whole grape, etc. Maybe I'm learning...?
Until next Sunday Monday!
